Surfing Fiji is world class and there is surf year around at Waidroka Bay Resort’s southern coast benefiting from the pacific ocean’s southern swell patterns. The pacific swells break on the various reef passages only 10-15 minutes boat ride from the resort and present a variety of untouched left & right-hand FIJI SURF BREAKS. The surf which is breaking over reef (reef-breaks) can be challenging at about 5 foot plus for more inexperienced surfers, who need to be competent in surfing these type of breaks. Due to the location of Waidroka Bay Resort with very few other Fiji surf resorts around – we benefit from Fiji’s only uncrowded waves (don’t spread the word…).

Fiji surfing benefits from 2 distinct surf seasons – Fijian winter time (April – October) consistently producing bigger waves. This is the time of year that low-pressure systems build in the Southern Hemisphere, south of New Zealand and send consistently big swells toward Fiji. During the winter season, the SE trade winds are predominant and cross-offshore at Frigates Passage, Pipe, 420’s, Shifties and Resorts. There are always days of calm winds between the various weather patterns providing for big glassy conditions on all of our 8 SURF BREAKS – the ultimate choice !

The Fijian summer time  ( November – March) is definitely warmer and not as windy, with frequent glassy conditions producing pure tropical surfing. The waves are usually originating from, shorter swell patterns with lighter winds, benefiting the less experienced surfers with smaller waves in general – with the odd surprise of size and glass combining to absolute perfection.

The recommended surfboards to take would be your normal short board and a larger semi-gun for the bigger days.  Board shorts can be worn all year round and booties are a personal option for the reef, as is a rash-guard and sunscreen protection.

The trips to any of our local breaks take no longer than 10 minutes. A boat-driver / surf-guide will always be on board for your guidance and safety and we always carry water and some snacks, as well as phone for your safety. The trip to Frigates Passage takes approx 45 minutes. Traveling in comfort aboard the ‘DAU-WAI’, a 34 foot catamaran style boat with full roof, padded seats and twin 300 HP engines, or ‘FIJI EXPLORER,’ a 30 foot catamaran style boat with a full roof, padded seats, or it might be ‘WAVE RIDER’ or the ‘WAVE HUNTER’ that heads out. Which ever the boat, it remains with you while you enjoy the world class waves at some of the best SURF BREAKS in the world.  Between sessions you can relax in the shaded comfort of the boat and enjoy lunch, snacks, drinks and stories from your Fijian surf guides.
